However, no additive effect of estrogen and GH was seen on femoral bone mineral density in aged ovariectomized rats Verhaeghe et al. 1996 ; . The present study was designed to study a possible skeletal interaction of estrogen and GH at the cellular level. The results demonstrate that estrogen, at physiological concentrations, increases GHR number and potentiates GH action in osteoblasts. Materials and Methods Cell culture Rat osteosarcoma cells UMR 10601 ; were cultured as described earlier Salles et al. 1994 ; . The cells were grown in phenol red free Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium DMEM ; RPMI, 5% dextran coated charcoal treated fetal calf serum DCC-FCS ; prior to binding studies or proliferation assays. At confluency, they were cultured for 24 h in phenol red free DMEM RPMI, 01% BSA prior to stimulation with 17 -estradiol Sigma, St Louis, MO, USA ; . Isolation and culture of human osteoblast-like hOB ; cells were done as described previously Nilsson et al. 1995 ; . Cancellous bone was obtained from orthopedic surgery. None of the cell donors had any known endocrine- or metabolic bone disease. The samples were dissected into small fragments and then thoroughly washed in F12 Gibco, Paisley, Strathclyde, UK ; . Subsequently the bone chips were transferred to 75 or 162 cm2 culture flasks Costar, Cambridge, MA, USA ; and cultured in 1: DMEM F12 Gibco ; , containing 10% vol vol fetal calf serum FCS, Gibco ; , fungizone 500 g l, Gibco ; , gentamycinsulphate 50 mg l, Sigma ; , L-glutamine 2 mmol l, Gibco ; and L-ascorbic acid 100 mg l, Merck, KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany ; , in a humidified, 5% CO2 atmosphere at 37 C. Osteoblastic phenotype of the cells was demonstrated by staining for alkaline phosphatase activity and release of osteocalcin and procollagen-1 into the culture media. In experiments where the effect of 17 -estradiol was tested, the hOB cells were precultured for 24 h in DMEM Ham's F12 without phenol red, 10% DCC-FCS prepared as described earlier Slootweg et al. 1992 , then 24 h in the same medium containing 05% DCC-FCS, after which the stimulation with 17 -estradiol took place. Cells were isolated from several patients varying in age and sex as indicated in results. Binding studies and chlorambucil.

The dietary approach in the different phases of chronic renal insufficiency CRI ; is one of the most important, and yet controversial, topics in the whole history of nephrology, since the time 35 years ago ; when dialysis facilities were not yet easily available and a low protein diet was the only means to delay the occurrence of uraemic symptoms w1, 2x. In the subsequent decades of the dialysis era, low protein diets varying from 0.85 to 0.3 gukguday with supplementation of essential amino acids and ketoanalogues ; were given emphasis, in order to slow the and chlorpromazine So water quality can be improved when bamboo charcoal is used in cooking and boiling Nursery. He was discharged to home at 3 months of age on a respiratory monitor because he continued to experience periods of apnea and bradycardia. Significant illnesses since then had included episodes of bronchiolitis at ages 5 months and 6 months, neither of which required hospitalization. Social history revealed that both the mother and father smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. Neither of them took any special precautions not to smoke around the baby. The father was employed in retail sales; the mother did not work outside the home. Physical examination revealed a sick-looking infant in respiratory distress. His temperature was 39.9 C rectal ; , pulse 144, and respiration 68 and shallow. His weight was in the 5th percentile for his age. No skin rash or cyanosis was present. He had clear rhinorrhea and nasal flaring. Chest examination revealed intercostal and subcostal retractions and bilateral scattered expiratory wheezes. The expiratory phase of breathing was prolonged. The heart and abdomen were normal. X-ray films of the chest revealed bilateral hyperinflation of the lungs with subsegmental atelectasis in both lower lobes as well as the right upper lobe. Fluorescent antibody test for respiratory syncytial virus antigen was positive, as was viral culture for respiratory syncytial virus RSV ; . Diagnosis: Bronchiolitis caused by RSV. Passive exposure to ETS is a primary risk factor for hospital admission for RSV and other lower respiratory tract disease. It has been estimated that there is an annual excess of 22, 000 hospitalizations and 1, 100 deaths due to RSV bronchiolitis attributable to parental smoking and chlorpropamide.

Plane is shown in Figure 22. If seen locally PN and PL are admixed to the azimuthal component PT in the course of precession around the tilted field line. It was therefore essential to realize a perfect symmetry of the field distribution across the magnet-gap median plane so that any effect from the in-plane components vanishes in total. The position and structure of the shim plates was designed using a three dimensional field calculation code TOSCA[14]. The field on the muon stopping distribution should be as high as possible by guiding the fringing field from the superconducting magnet so that it decouples the stray fields in the experimental area. In addition a possible effect from coil misalignment in the cryostat should be negligible. There should be no saturation in the iron in order to suppress unwanted effects which might be material dependent and have hysteresis characteristics. Finally, a simple structure was prefered for ease of precise installation. In the designed configuration an average field strength in the region of stopping muons of 130 Gauss was realized for the 0.9-T magnet excitation. The magnetization in the shim plates made of high quality magnet steel is 300 Gauss maximum and well below saturation. Each plate was manufactured with a precision of 50 m and the installation was done with an accuracy of 200 m relative to the magnet gap median planes by using a specially prepared jig. Field mapping was performed at 0.9T excitation using a 3-dimensional Hall element mounted on a specially made scanning device. The four-Euler-angle method was employed. Details of the measurement in which the strength accuracy of 0.1 Gauss and an angular accuracy of 1.0 mr are achieved was described in [23]. Three tilt angles of the distribution were deduced from the measured field maps, and are summarized in Table 9. These characteristics of the muon spin rotation field are adequate for the present experiment. 39 and charcoal.

At last years Bhogg Brighton Festival event which was a talk by television gardener, Gay Search, someone in the audience asked for suggestions for plants which grow well in pots without much watering because he didn't want to waste water. I work in a large garden with a courtyard where pots are often left unwatered for quite a few days so thought it might be useful to pass on some ideas. This may seem obvious but choosing a good container or pot can make a lot of difference. A large pot holds a much greater reservoir of water in the compost it contains. As long as it is watered very thoroughly when it is watered the plants will have access to moisture in the compost for quite a long time. It is a very good idea to leave 1-2" between the top of the compost and the rim of the pot. This allows the water poured into the pot to sink down into the compost rather than running off and down the outside of the pot. A large pot full of compost can absorb a lot of water and you want the water to get right down to the bottom of the compost, not just to wet the top layer. Glazed pots and plastic pots hold water for much longer. An unglazed terracotta pot can dry out very quickly from all over its surface, especially if it is full sun. I line the sides of terracotta pots with plastic before filling them with compost so that I can enjoy the aesthetics of terracotta. It is important not to let the plastic cover the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot though. A layer of small stones or broken slate tiles covering the surface of the compost will act as a mulch and help to prevent water evaporating. The positioning of the pots also makes a difference. Potted plants in shade will lose less water by transposition and therefore use less water from the compost. Now, at last, a few plant ideas. Plants I use for really hot dry positions are Phormiums, Agapanthus, Agave and Box. They seem to survive very well on not much water. Lots of slightly tender succulent plants such as Agaves, Aeoniums, Semperviviums etc thrive in pots in hot positions and can make interesting displays. Not all are hardy though and some do need to be overwintered in a very sheltered spot or on a window sill inside. Pelargoniums, lavenders and Euphorbias also do well in large pots. Another of my favourites is a range of plants called Libertias. They are not very well known but should be! They all have thin elegant evergreen leaves and spires of white flowers but I think Libertia ixioides is the most beautiful with its thin arching stems and sprays of pure white flowers that look like hovering moths. They are very forgiving for lack of watering. Lastly, a word of warning to look out for vine weevil grubs. These are small, creamy coloured grubs about 1 cm long with brown heads; they are normally slightly curled up. The adult, which is a small charcoal coloured beetle with a very long nose, lays its eggs in the compost around the base of the plant and the larvae hatch and eat the plant roots, eventually often killing the plant. They seem to like succulents especially but all pot plants are vulnerable to attack. There is a very good biological control available from the Organic Gardening Catalogue. These are packs of nematodes which are mixed with water and watered in to the compost in spring or autumn and the nematodes then seek out and kill the vine weevil grubs but don't attack other insects. I treat all the pots in the courtyard with these nematodes every year to avoid a build up of this pest. Tessa and chlorzoxazone.
