These include aliphatic hydroxylations, aromatic oxidation, alkene epoxidation, nitrogen dealkylation, oxidative deamination, oxygen dealkylation, nitrogen oxidation, oxidative desulfurization, oxidative dehalogenation and oxidative denitrification Wislocki et al., 1980 ; . Not all isoforms of cytochrome P450 have been identified in the kidney. The study of the cytochrome P450 system has been aided by the agreement among the workers in this area on a common nomenclature for genes and gene products. The reader is referred to the P450 home page on the Internet for the latest information: : icgeb. trieste.it p450 . In 1989, Gonzalez summarized the current molecular biology data, while in 1990, Ioannides and Parke summarized the current protein work. The most current form of the nomenclature system, found in Nelson et al. 1996 ; , will be given whenever possible. The reader is referred to this review for information on enzyme functions and species location of the P450 families and subfamilies. The italicized root symbol CYP for human ; will be followed by an Arabic number denoting the family, a letter representing the subfamily, and an Arabic number representing the gene within the subfamily. The gene products of the CYP genes, messenger ribonucleic acid mRNA ; , and proteins will be referred to using all capital letters. Information from Nelson et al. 1993 ; was used to provide the new name replacing the old common names for P450 enzymes. However, much of the earlier work was done using enzyme assays or immunological techniques. Because it is not possible to verify that the P450 enzymes studied biochemically actually represent the enzymes encoded by the isolated genes common names will appear in this review in addition to the current nomenclature of Nelson et al. 1996 ; . The following protein isoforms of the CYP genes have been found in the kidney from studies of enzymes. CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 enzyme activities were found Ioannides and Parke, 1990 ; . CYP4A1 P450 LA ; was present in normal kidneys Hardwick et al, 1987. ; Untreated kidney was shown to have low CYP1A enzyme activity, which this was induced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, -napthoflavone, and 2-acetylaminoflourine Ioannides and Parke, 1990 ; . Molecular biology techniques have helped to find cytochrome P450 genes in the kidney. Members of the CYP2 and CYP4 gene families were among the earliest genes found in the kidney Gonzalez, 1989 ; . CYP4A11 deoxyribonucleic acid DNA ; was cloned from a human kidney complementary deoxyribonucleic acid cDNA ; library independently by Palmer et al. 1993 ; and Imaoka et al. 1993 ; . Messenger ribonucleic acid mRNA ; related to CYP4A11 was found in liver and kidney with the highest abundance in the kidney ; using Northern blot analysis and ribonuclease protection assays Palmer, 1993 ; . The CYP4A5, A6, and A7 genes have been found in rabbit kidney by Johnson et al. 1990 ; , whereas the.

In the subarticular trabecular bone Fig. 5 ; . It likely that the sensitivity of the trabecular bone reflects differences in the microenvironment of the osteocytes and osteoblasts. Trabecular bone is composed of thin plates that flex under load to a greater extent than in cortical bone. Further, mechanical strain stimulates production of osteoblast signals including nitric oxide 34 ; , which are proapoptotic and may affect the glucocorticoid response. An interaction of glucocorticoid and stretch responses would be consistent with the observed osteocyte and osteoblast apoptosis, but such an interaction has not been verified experimentally. In conclusion, our data indicate that high concentrations of glucocorticoids damage bone by a mechanism that includes osteocyte and osteoblast death, most likely by apoptosis of contiguous groups of cells in osteons. In addition, this study shows that adsorption of tetracycline can be used to detect very early lesions in bone that create only subtle morphological changes Fig. 5 ; . We hypothesize that the anatomy of the femur, which has a large active surface area and high stress load, makes the subarticular trabecular bone particularly sensitive to glucocorticoid-induced apoptosis.
Prompt publication of papers is one of the first considerations in the conduct of a scientific journal. In this respect a bi-monthly journal is at a disadvantage, and it has not always been possible to fulfill our intent of publishing papers within three to five months of their recepit. Experience has indicated that we can do much better with a more frequent schedule of publication, provided it is justified by the availability of a sufficient number of acceptable manuscripts. With the objective of speeding publication, it is planned to issue The Journal on a more frequent schedule with a view to eventual monthly publication. The issues will be numbered 1 to 12, but at the start many, depending on the availability of material, will be combined to cover a twomouth period. The number of pages in each issue will vary, but it is anticipated that the total number of pages published will exceed that of the past year, as it has with each succeeding year for the past five years-Editor.

Many studies identifying levels of diesel-related air pollutants inside school buses have been reported, some claim to have been able to derive quantitative estimates of "self-pollution", i.e., source contribution from the engine powering the bus. Incabin exposure to crankcase emissions of lube-oil products released from road draft tubes located inside the engine compartment non-tail pipe emissions ; have also been reported. Reports of exposure to student passengers from source contribution have resulted in heightened concern among parents, school officials, and regulatory agencies. The reliability and accuracy of quantitative estimates of source contribution is dependent upon the approach and methodology employed to measure source contribution. To compare the results of prior source contribution studies, we conducted a study using three distinct methodologies to measure source contribution in two school buses operating on two school bus routes. Methods used in this study include an explicit fuel-borne tracer iridium measured DPM-related constituents; and a deuterated-alkane tracer placed into the lube oil. In addition to these methods, an on-board dilution tunnel was used to collect exhaust samples to derive estimates of DPM emission rates over an actual route. This study is unique in that it: 1 ; Used three separate methods to evaluate potential source contribution inside the same school bus; 2 ; Will provide quantitative estimates of potential exposure to non-tailpipe crankcase emissions; and 3 ; Will estimate DPM source contribution based on actual on-road measurements of DPM and crankcase emissions. Samples are undergoing analyses and anticipated to be complete in January.

At the same time showed that ASA therapy could possibly be harmful in patients with major ventricular damage. 1 2 On the other hand, Oosterga et al, 38 after conducting a post hoc analysis of the Captopril and Thrombolysis Study CATS ; , found that ASA therapy did not attenuate the acute and long-term effects of ACE inhibition after acute myocardial infarction, but rather independently reduces left ventricular dilation after myocardial infarction Table ; .29, 38 These results provide interesting and provocative data not only with regard to a possible negative interaction between ACE inhibitors and ASA, but also with regard to the role of ASA therapy in heart failure in general. It is important to realize that until further studies clarify these issues, the evidence for harm or benefit from ASA therapy in patients with heart failure remains inconclusive. THE ROLE OF PULMONARY FACTORS IN THE EFFECT OF ACE INHIBITOR EFFICACY AND THEIR COUNTERACTION BY ASA THERAPY Pulmonary factors appear to be important determinants of exercise intolerance in patients with heart fail
